TL;DR: A NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is Portugal’s tax identification number — you need it for almost everything: opening a bank account, signing a rental contract, registering with the SNS, enrolling children in school, and applying for your D7 or D8 visa. Non-residents can obtain a NIF remotely through a fiscal representative (representante fiscal) — a licensed agent in Portugal who acts as your Portuguese tax address until you arrive. Cost: €100–€300 depending on the service. Processing time: 1–3 weeks. Get this done first, before anything else.
The NIF is the starting point for everything administrative in Portugal. Before you can open a bank account, you need a NIF. Before you can open a bank account, you can’t fund a Portuguese account to show on your D7 application. The chain of dependencies runs through the NIF — which is why it’s the first practical step every family should take, often months before the planned move date.
What a NIF Is and What It’s Used For
The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal) is a 9-digit Portuguese tax number assigned to every individual who has tax dealings with Portugal — residents, non-residents, and businesses alike. It is issued by the Autoridade Tributária e Aduaneira (AT) — the Portuguese tax authority — and is stored on the Portal das Finanças.
You will need your NIF for:
- Opening a Portuguese bank account
- Signing a rental contract
- Applying for D7 or D8 visa (some consulates require it)
- Registering with the SNS (public health)
- Enrolling children in school
- Buying or selling property in Portugal
- Setting up utilities in your name
- Filing Portuguese tax returns (IRS)
- Receiving Portuguese income or making Portuguese purchases above certain thresholds
- Registering a car
- Almost any interaction with a Portuguese government body
Two Ways to Get a NIF
Option 1: In person at a Finanças office in Portugal
If you are already in Portugal — on a visit, a recon trip, or after arrival — you can obtain a NIF in person at your local Autoridade Tributária (Finanças) office. Bring your passport (or EU national ID card) and proof of address from your home country (a utility bill or bank statement). If you are a non-EU national who is not yet resident in Portugal, you also need to bring a fiscal representative — or appoint one before attending.
The in-person process is quick — typically completed in the same visit, sometimes within 30 minutes. The NIF is issued immediately or within a few days. This is the fastest route if you’re able to visit Portugal before your move.
Option 2: Remotely through a fiscal representative
If you have not yet visited Portugal — or if your move is still months away — you can obtain a NIF remotely through a fiscal representative (representante fiscal). This is the route most families use.
A fiscal representative is a licensed individual or service in Portugal who:
- Acts as your Portuguese tax address until you establish residency
- Submits the NIF application to the Finanças on your behalf
- Receives any correspondence from the Portuguese tax authority on your behalf
- Typically charges an annual fee for this service (€50–€150/year)
Several services specialise in remote NIF applications for expats. The process: you provide scanned copies of your passport and proof of address from your home country; the service submits the application; your NIF is issued within 1–3 weeks and sent to you by email or post.
Fiscal Representative Services: What to Know
Several English-language services offer NIF applications for non-resident expats. Costs vary:
- One-off NIF application fee: €150–€300 per person
- Annual fiscal representation fee (ongoing until you become resident): €50–€150/year
- Some services bundle NIF + fiscal representation for a flat fee
When comparing services, look for: clear pricing with no hidden annual fees, confirmation that they are a licensed fiscal representative (not just an intermediary), and English-language communication throughout. Ask in the Porto and Lisbon expat Facebook groups for current recommendations — the market for these services is active and word-of-mouth is reliable.
Important: once you become a legal resident in Portugal, you no longer need a fiscal representative — you update your address to your Portuguese address at Finanças (portaldasfinancas.gov.pt) and the fiscal representation ends. Do this promptly after arriving — your NIF should show your Portuguese address, not a fiscal representative’s address, once you’re resident.
NIF for Children
Children need their own NIF — it is not shared with parents. A child’s NIF is required for:
- School enrolment in Portuguese state schools
- SNS registration
- Including children as dependants on your Portuguese tax return (for tax deductions)
- Opening a bank account in a child’s name
Children’s NIF applications follow the same process as adults — in person at Finanças with a parent present and the child’s birth certificate and passport, or remotely through a fiscal representative who handles family applications. Most fiscal representative services offer discounted rates for additional family members in the same application.
Children born in Portugal are typically registered with a NIF at birth through the birth registration process — ask the Conservatória do Registo Civil when registering the birth.
Common NIF Problems and How to Fix Them
Wrong address on your NIF
If your NIF was obtained through a fiscal representative, it will initially show the representative’s address — not yours. After arriving in Portugal and establishing residency, update your address at portaldasfinancas.gov.pt (under “Os Meus Dados” — “My Data”) or in person at a Finanças office. This is important: if your NIF shows the wrong address, correspondence goes to the wrong place and your tax records are linked to the wrong location.
Name discrepancies
Ensure your name on the NIF exactly matches your passport. Even minor differences — middle name included on one but not the other, accent marks missing — can cause problems when documents are cross-referenced. Check your NIF registration details on the Portal das Finanças and request a correction at the Finanças office if anything is wrong.
Lost NIF or forgotten number
Your NIF is on your Portuguese tax card (cartão de contribuinte), on any official Portuguese correspondence, and accessible via the Portal das Finanças with your tax password. If you’ve forgotten your NIF and can’t access the portal, visit any Finanças office with your passport to retrieve it.
NIF not recognised by a bank or institution
Occasionally a newly issued NIF takes a few days to propagate through the Portuguese systems — a bank may not recognise it immediately. Wait 48–72 hours after receiving confirmation of your NIF and try again. If the problem persists, contact your fiscal representative or the Finanças office directly.
The Portal das Finanças: Your NIF Home
Once you have your NIF, register on the Portal das Finanças (portaldasfinancas.gov.pt). You need a tax password (senha das finanças) — request this at the portal or at a Finanças office. With portal access you can: view your NIF details and update your address, file your annual IRS tax return, view tax correspondence, access e-faturas (electronic invoices — more on this below), and manage NHR/IFICI applications.
E-Faturas: The Tax Receipt System
Portugal has an excellent electronic invoice system — e-faturas. When you give your NIF at shops, restaurants, and service providers, the transaction is logged against your NIF in the Portal das Finanças. At tax return time, these logged expenses contribute to tax deductions — health expenses, education expenses, housing costs, and general expenses all have deductible components. Always give your NIF when asked at any shop or restaurant — it costs nothing and reduces your tax bill at the end of the year.
When to Get Your NIF
As early as possible — ideally 3–6 months before your planned arrival date. The NIF unlocks the bank account, which unlocks your D7 application evidence, which unlocks your visa. The chain cannot start without the NIF. Families who leave this until the last minute consistently find themselves scrambling. There is no reason to wait — you can obtain a NIF remotely as a non-resident at any point, and the cost is low.
NIF application procedures and fiscal representative requirements may change. Always verify current processes at portaldasfinancas.gov.pt or with a licensed fiscal representative.
